Meet our first distinguished speakers

We are happy to announce some of the Summit’s distinguished speakers and themes that will feature in the Summit Programme:

Dr. Paraskevi A. Katsaounou (Assistant Professor of Pulmonary Medicine, Evaggelismos Hospital, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece; Chair of Smoking Cessation and Public Health Group of Hellenic Thoracic Society; Chair of Group 6.3 Tobacco, Smoking Cessation and Health Education European Respiratory Society), who will speak about the Global Burden of Tobacco.

Within a session on tobacco control and smoking cessation, Dr. Kostas Athanasakis, (Department of Health Economics, National School of Public Health, Athens, Greece), will present “The ‘Harm Reduction’ Approach” and Prof. Panagiotis D. Bamidis (Associate Professor, Medical Education Informatics, Lab of Medical Physics, Medical School, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece and Coordinator of the Horizon 2020 SmokeFreeBrain Project) will present the first results from the SmokeFreeBrain project in “Multi-disciplinary approaches in Smoking Cessation…”.

Public health policies and regulatory framework in Europe and the US will be presented at a session on the Summit’s first day: the “Regulatory Framework on Harm Reduction” by Prof. Nikos Maniadakis, (Director, Department of Health Services Management & Alternate Dean, National School of Public Health) and “The UK experience” by Martin Dockrell, Tobacco Control Programme Lead for Public Health England, UK.

Prof. Derek Yach (President and Chair of the Foundation for a Smoke-Free World, former professor of Global Health, Yale University) will present the Vision of the newly established Foundation for a Smoke free world and the Tobacco Harm Reduction strategy.

Prof. Alexis Bailey, Senior Lecturer in Neuropharmacology, Institute of Medical & Biomedical Education, St. George’s University of London, UK will address the Summit on the subjects of toxicology and biomarkers.

Prof. Demetrios Kouretas, (Department of Biochemistry-Biotechnology, University of Thessaly, Larissa, Greece; President, Hellenic Society of Toxicology) and Prof. Konstantinos Poulas, (Laboratory of Molecular Biology and Immunology, Departmen t of Pharmacy, University of Patras, Greece) as Organisers will also address the Summit.

Prof. Ignatios Ikonomidis (Medical School, University of Athens), Dr. Kalliroi Kourea (Medical School, University of Athens), Prof. Helen Lazaratou (Medical School, University of Athens), Prof. Christos Lionis (Medical School, University of Crete), Prof. Gregory Sivolapenko (Department of Pharmacy, University of Patras), Prof. Michael Toumbis (University of Nicosia), Prof Athanasios Vozikis (Department of Economics, Piraeus University) and members of their teams, have also accepted to participate in sessions of their expertise.
