Prof. Christos Lionis, MD, PhD FRCGP(Hon), FWONCA, FESC graduated from the University of Athens Medical School in 1979. Since 1995 Christos Lionis is working at the University of Crete Medical School (CSFM), where he is Professor and Director of the Clinic of Social and Family Medicine. He is the Coordinator of the Practice-based Research Network, University of Crete, Faculty of Medicine, and is also responsible for the supervision of a number of PhD students. From 2001 to 2004, Prof. Lionis held the title of Deputy General Director of the Regional Health and Welfare system of Crete, a planning and regulatory body forming part of the Greek National Health Service with responsibility for overseeing all health and welfare services. He was elected as Professor of General Practice and Primary Health Care at the School of Medicine, University of Crete, Greece at the end of 2009. Since 2009, Prof. Lionis has coordinated the Primary Health Care Unit at the Municipality of Heraklion, a shared initiative with the University Hospital and the Municipality of Heraklion. Prof. Lionis is also a member of the Executive Boards of various professional organisations including: the European Primary Care Cardiology Society (EPCCS); Research Committee of International Primary Care Respiratory Group – IPCRG and WONCA Working Party on Research. Cardiovascular and mental health with a focus on behaviour change attracts the principal clinical and research interests of Prof. Lionis during the past five years. Lately his involvement in the European Society of Cardiology both in the preparation of the Conference Programme and the Guidelines Group, as well as in the WONCA Working Party on Mental Health, where he is acting as Vice-present, has been Prof. Lionis’ focus. Prof. Lionis is also the current chairman of the International Federation of Practice based Research Network (IFPCRN). Furthermore, Prof. Lionis is involved with an editorial and advisory capacity in a number of international journals, including: International Journal of Rural and Remote Health (Editor in Chief of European Section), Family Practice (Associate Editor); BMC Family Practice (Section Editor); Journal of Compassionate Care (co-chief editor). He was awarded an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) London (May 2009), from the WONCA (November 2016) and from the European Society of Cardiology (August 2017). The CSFM and Prof. Lionis have a strong involvement in several European collaborative projects including FP7 research projects (OTC Sociomed, RESTORE, EU-WISE), Third Health Programme/CHAFEA (SPIMEU, EUR-HUMAN) and HORIZON2020 (FRESH-AIR).
